myCOOL.com relaunches with a Web 2.0 style design

We changed how our index page looks. Again :)We are afterall a constantly evolving site, and we want to make sure we provide the best experience to our users. Our old site looked like an outdated social networking site, so now this looks more appropriate. We wanted to make the new design simple, while still appealing to crowds to who come here to start a community, or join one. Our challenge with the joiners, is that they need to easily find the community they're looking for, or they need to be shown things that may be of interest like new, nice, cool communities for them to select from. So we added tags, removed categories, and we added new, featured, and popular communities on our index page..As for people wanting to create a community, our mid term goals will be to improve the search engine indexability of the ajax based forums; so more people can discover mycool through their searchers. then we'll improve  some glitches during the signup process and board creation process. We also want premium users to buy their domain name and fully customize the look and feel :)We'll see what happens next :)

Amazon.com bought into a Social Networking/Blogging site called 43things.com which allows you to keep track of what you want to do in life. The site now exists in French, Italian and probably some other languages. The company is based out of Seattle. Interesting concept overall. You can browse the different people's goals, and you can browse by goals. It's a bit like Flickr in the way that it allows you to navigate.

Amazon entering Social Networking to increase sales ?

Earlier last year, it was announced on some website that Amazon was launching a social networking website called "pricekut", and The Chicago Tribune had mistakenly taken the hoax seriously and had written an article on the subject. Original Article on Amazon's Social Networking Service Hoax

But, a year and a half after this article, Amazon seems to have started to pursue this idea and it seems to be planning on using Social Networking as a means to increase sales.

There were several job postings posted on their job site. One is a Software Development Engineer/ Social Networking, #04-13660

and they further explain the position : "Amazon.com's Community team is launching a major initiative to make social interaction a core aspect of the Amazon user experience. We have an immediate opening for a self-starting talented software engineer to design and build features to promote interactions between customers for product discovery, recommendations, and gifting.... "

So afterall, Amazon.com has also seen the power of Social Networking in Online Sales. We'll see what features they will release.

myCOOL.com officially launches on July 1st 2005 after 3 months of development.

Good luck to the communities, good luck to our team in making this the most usable community/blog/forum site on the market.
